More on Rail Travel

Of course rail does not have to be the only mode of travel. You can very successfully combine train and car with bus and guided tours quite easily.

On trains you can relax whilst crossing deserts, rivers and lakes in comfort watching the vista forever a-changing. Enjoy meals, drinks at the bar or even watch a movie. Trains are a charming way to travel and a journey to be remembered - especially if you take one of the spectacular trips on the Rocky Mountaineer or what about a two day trip through the Canadian Rockies to Calgary or on the Skeena through snow-filled valleys starting from Jasper. In the USA why not take one of the most popular trips which is the Coast Starlight. It travels between Seattle and Los Angeles and you journey through mountains covered in snow, valleys with towering trees, the Big Sur along the Pacific shore or what about from coast to coast? The Sunset Limited travels from Florida to California and does not require you to change trains.

When you choose to travel by train in the USA there are a myriad of highly recommended trips. You will be sure to find some pass that will suit your travels.

The passes are 'sectioned' off. You get a Western Pass from the west coast to as far east as Chicago and New Orleans; The Eastern Pass from the East Coast as far west as Albuquerque, the Northeast Pass cover from Virginia to up to Montreal and to Niagra Falls. If you are only travelling in ever-popular California, you can get a California Pass which gives you 7 days of travel in a 21 day period. Or if you have lots of time or lots of terrain to cover, then consider the National/North America Pass which covers all of the USA AND Canada and valid for 30 consecutive days. Discounts are offered for children under 15 and for seniors 62 or more year..

So now let's get to the "Most Spectacular Train Trip in the World" - the Rocky Mountaineer. This two day, all daylight rail excursion between Vancouver and Banff/Calgary or Vancouver and Jasper, travelling either eastbound or westbound winds through more than 1000 kms of breathtaking scenery. The tour includes one night in a hotel at the midway point, Kamloops. You get two classes of travel, RedLeaf or GoldLeaf service which features panoramic views from full length dome windows.

The Whistler Mountaineer... a three and a half hour journey from Vancouver to Whistler delivering the unique blend of contrasts - cities and old growth forests, bustling action and natural serenity, deep valleys and snow-capped peaks, seascapes and mountain views.... Priced from a low Canadian $99 one way and half price for children under 12.
